At the heart of the book are two sentences spoken by his mother when he was still a boy:

“God will take care of you.”

Their meaning follows him across decades, countries, losses, and unanswered questions.

Between Bars and Seas asks the reader to look beyond dates, ideologies, and statistics and remember the human beings behind them: fathers, mothers, children, workers, prisoners, and families waiting for answers.

It is a memoir about the past, but ultimately it asks a question about the present:
